The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Sola Adigun, has called for stronger collaboration among teachers, parents and government to address challenges in Nigeria’s education sector and improve students’ development.

Adigun made the call on Thursday in Ado Ekiti during an interactive multicast anchored by the Ekiti State Bureau of Community Communications.

He described teachers as guardians and mentors who, alongside parents and government, have a shared responsibility to nurture students and create an environment conducive to learning.

He urged teachers nationwide to remain committed to their profession and strive to become impactful educators, while calling on parents to provide their children with adequate care, guidance and support.

Adigun also charged students to remain focused on their studies, work hard to achieve their goals and shun cultism and other social vices.

“The shared responsibility of raising children is essential to addressing challenges in the education sector,” he said.

Adigun applauds Ekiti interventions

Turning to developments in Ekiti State, the ASUSS president commended the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for interventions in teachers’ welfare, infrastructure, salary payments and students’ welfare.

He particularly welcomed the increase in the amount available to workers under the state’s car and housing loan scheme, saying the initiative would help improve teachers’ welfare.

He also cited the provision of free buses for teachers and students travelling to schools as another intervention that had eased transportation challenges, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidy.

“The provision of buses to convey teachers and students to various schools in Ekiti State, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidy, has also provided significant relief to the workers. The transportation service has been provided free of charge,” he said.

However, Adigun said further intervention was needed to consolidate the progress recorded in the sector.

He called for continuous training and retraining of teachers to strengthen their professional capacity and improve the quality of education.

“There is the need for continuous training and retraining of teachers to enhance their professional capacity and improve the quality of education,” he said.

He further urged the government to sustain improved payment of leave bonuses to teachers and other workers, saying this would complement existing welfare measures and promote better working conditions.

Adigun maintained that sustained cooperation among government, teachers, parents and students remained crucial to achieving meaningful improvements in education.
