The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has directed that its members nationwide should no longer remit funds to the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), citing what it described as an “unbecoming attitude” by the regulatory body.

The decision was part of resolutions reached at the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday at Green Minds Hotel, Utako, Abuja, with delegates from across the country in attendance.

Addressing journalists after the meeting alongside members of the National Administrative Council, the National President of ASUSS, Comrade Sola Adigun, said the union was dissatisfied with the conduct of TRCN in its dealings with ASUSS.

“The NEC frowned at the disposition of TRCN in respect of their unbecoming attitude. A situation whereby TRCN will desire to have our money, but timidly they want to be obeying NUT, getting instruction from NUT,” he said.

He added that the union had taken a firm position on the matter. “The NEC in session has resolved that henceforth, ASUSS members’ money shall not be deducted to TRCN across the country. If you don’t want our face, our money will not be available.”

The NEC also raised concerns over alleged harassment of its members in the Federal Capital Territory by agents of the Nigeria Union of Teachers during an ongoing industrial action declared by the latter.

According to Adigun, ASUSS is not part of the strike and had instructed its members in the FCT to continue their duties.

“Our chapter in the FCT vehemently opposed the strike and ordered our members to keep on doing their daily activities in the school. But surprisingly, what we discovered was that NUT representatives went about harassing our members in their workplace,” he said.

The union called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and relevant government agencies to intervene. “The NEC in session frowned at this and want the minister and other government agencies to warn and put an end to this,” he added.

On internal matters, the NEC cautioned against the proliferation of unauthorized groups within the union, warning that such bodies are not recognized under its constitution.

“NEC in session resolved that all illegal bodies and associations that are not in tandem with our constitution across the states should not be tolerated by our state chapters,” Adigun stated, urging aggrieved members to channel complaints through established procedures.

He further warned that state leaders who disregard directives from the National Secretariat would face sanctions.

The union also emphasized the need for renewed professional commitment among members, while outlining plans to improve welfare through insurance schemes.

“We called the attention of our members to the need for their commitment to duty, commitment to this profession, because this is the hope of the future,” Adigun said.

He noted that the union would pursue initiatives aimed at improving members’ wellbeing. “The NEC in session resolved that the union will be involved in group life insurance policies and health insurance policies, so that our members will have confidence… to give their best to the society.”

Also speaking, the National Secretary, Comrade Kenneth C. Okoh, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity of labour, and professional integrity of its members.

The NEC meeting is ASUSS’s highest decision-making body and serves as a platform for reviewing developments in the education sector and setting the union’s national agenda.
